After the last post whining about bad beats, it's only fair to acknowledge that my luck has taken a turn for the better recently. From a low water mark of about $60, I clawed my way up to $125 which was the threshold for moving up to $0.10/$0.25. At that point, I went on a very nice heater and shot up to $250 within no more than a couple of days, allowing me to move up to $0.25/$0.50. One of my first hands at $0.10/$0.25 was a nice suckout of KK against AA. I didn't have any significant suckouts after that, but I made a lot of hands and they always held up.
I wonder if the play is significantly better at $0.25/$0.50. Just now I was trying to find a table where Poker Stars reports at least 40% of the people see a flop, but I couldn't even find one with 30%. If I look at the full tables, I can see significant waiting lists at the loosest tables. So there are a few other microstakes sharks cruising these waters. Also, the games probably aren't the best at this hour of the day (10 AM, Pacific Standard Time).
As I've mentioned, my threshold for moving up is having 500 big blinds at the level I am moving up to. No one would actually consider this adequately bankrolled for that level. In the sense, that if I played indefinitely at that level, there is a very real chance I would go broke. But I'll address this by moving down a level if I have a significant downswing. I think I'll let myself stay at a certain level as long as I have at least 500 big blinds at the level below. So, for example, I'll stay at $0.25/$0.50 unless I drop down to below $125. That's kind of aggressive, but what the heck, it's a trivial amount of money. I guess if I drop down below, say, $50, I'll get more conservative to avoid going busto.
